What is a Built-up (BUR) Roof?

Built-up roofs, also called BUR, are composed of alternating layers of bitumen, which is asphalt, and reinforcing felts, usually fiberglass or polyester. This creates a finished membrane that is topped with a layer of aggregate, such as stone or gravel. BUR systems can be granules, coated, gravel or smooth surface. The multiple layers provide extra durability and protection.

BUR Roofing is the most common roofing material used on commercial low-slope roofs.
