More About Green Roof Systems

What is a green roof system?
A green roof system, also known as a vegetated roof or living roof, is a vegetative layer grown on a rooftop. It involves high quality waterproofing, a root repellent system, drainage system, filter cloth, a lightweight growing medium, and plants.

How are green roofs installed?
Each component of a green roof system can be installed loose laid or built up and installed separately. Or a modular system can be prepared in movable interlocking grids including plants already prepared with a drainage layer and filter cloth. No matter which option you select, all green roofs include a base waterproofing and root repellent layer to keep you structure safe and undamaged.

Do green roofs require an irrigation system?
All plants require water, and there are several options to choose from to deliver the water you need to maintain a healthy green roof system.

  • Spray irrigation: includes a series of sprinkler heads that spray water on a regular schedule. This is similar to a sprinkler system in a residential front yard.
  • Drip irrigation: water is delivered slowly and consistently by dripping at several points along the roof. This is ideal for large plants that require more water.
